In the 5th expansion to the bestseller Carcassonne - the 2001 Game of the Year - players are given new opportunities to consolidate their influence in the area around Carcassonne. Traveling merchants transport their goods to surrounding towns and monasteries. This means prosperity for all meeples, towns in the surrounding area grow to a stately size and elect their own mayors. Simple farmers become wealthy and build estates. The church tries to consolidate its influence by founding abbeys.
