Good staff is hard to find. This also applies to Monster Inn. As dungeon masters, the players therefore look around the local tavern for monsters with fighting skills for their dark dungeon. But the other dungeon lords and ladies in the neighborhood had the same idea and so a fierce bidding war for the best monsters begins. If you're not careful, you'll not only get the weakest monsters, but maybe even one of the nasty humans lurking around the tavern.
In Monster Inn, creature cards with monsters and humans of varying value are revealed in each round. The players naturally only want to hire the most powerful monsters and send the nasty little humans to the competition. They therefore bid on the cards with gold pieces or gems. But the humans are always auctioned off first and those who can no longer or no longer want to bid take the current pool of treasures and the card that is currently being bid for. Who will be the most clever and fill their own dungeon with powerful monsters that will turn any human intruders into mush?
